Myopia Management
Myopia or short sightedness is on the rise. By 2050, half the world’s population will be myopic.
What is Myopia?
You might ask, why does this matter?
It matters because as you become more myopic, there is an increased risk of eye disease, such as glaucoma, retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy and posterior sub capsular cataract.
Those who have a refraction over -3.00, are 3x more likely to develop posterior sub capsular cataract and glaucoma. They are 9x more likely to develop retinal detachment and myopic macular degeneration.
Once the prescription is over -6.00, this risk increases to 21x for retinal detachment and 40x for myopic maculopathy.
At Jones Eyecare we have the right specialised equipment to fully assess a child’s risk of becoming myopic, whether their myopia is due to axial length elongation (length of the eye) or refractive, and therefore whether myopia management is suitable for them.
There are 3 different options for myopia management:
Spectacles e.g. Hoya MiYO Smart
Soft contact lenses e.g. Coopervision MiSight daily disposable lenses
Ortho k - this is where they wear a rigid lens overnight to correct their myopia so they are free from contact lenses or spectacles during the day.
